Sensitive management can
enhance special features and
protect ecology

Woodland management is critical to maintain the health and  biodiversity of our woodlands and to promote the quality and value of their timber. Sensitive management can enhance special features, protect ecology and ancient trees, maintain landscape value and promote the recreational and sporting activities of the woodland.   Our clients can draw on a wide range of expertise from our team and will have a dedicated manager for their woodland or project.

Our team will undertake any of the necessary functions required to enable the successful management of woodland.  Whether management plans, felling licences grants, protected species surveys or ecological reports we have the skills and experience. We pride ourselves on listening to our customer’s needs whether they are focused on environmental conservation, timber production, shooting interests or amenity and we frame our advice for the long-term sustainable benefit of the woodland resource.

We offer an initial meeting with a land owner to get a sense of the woodlands and objectives.  This helps to guide our recommended course of management actions.

We offer:

  • The cornerstone of woodland management is the creation of a long-term plan. This will formalise the owner’s objectives and vision for a 10-20 year period. Forestry Commission approved Woodland Management Plans are now an essential requirement to access other grants. Our team can prepare plans for woodlands of any size and apply for grants to contribute to the costs. A plan will include:

    1. Desk based and physical baseline surveys of the wood

    2. A suite of quality GIS based maps

    3. Identification of significant threats (e.g tree disease) and opportunities

    4. Plans of management activity and tree felling

    5. Liaison with the Forestry Commission and any relevant statutory consultees

  • We have long-term working relationships with local contractors and have experienced teams who are able to undertake management work to the high quality we expect. Our focus in on communicating the outcome required, providing a safe working, risk-assessed method and ensuring all works are completed to the high standards we demand for our client. Such work may include:

    1. Ride and open space creation or management

    2. Ditching & Drainage

    3. Hand cutting and coppicing

    4. Temporary and permanent deer or stock fencing

    5. Invasive species removal (rhododendron/gaultheria/bracken etc)

    6. Restocking and plantation maintenance

    7. Infrastructure installation and improvement (e.g roads, culverts, loading bays)

  • Deer populations are growing rapidly in England and they are increasingly causing irreparable damage to woodlands and crops. This damage can have a significant detrimental effect on the timber and biodiversity value of woodlands.

Our team can provide deer impact assessments that help to identify the extent of the problem and produce deer management plans which detail appropriate actions required to mitigate any issues. We can also arrange for temporary or permanent deer fencing to be installed, to situate deer high seats, for programmes of deer culling if required (including liaising with and organising qualified, professional deer stalkers) and for herbivore prevention on new plantings. We always ensure our activities are as humane and environmentally sensitive as possible.

Grant applications & agreements

There are numerous grants available to support woodland management and woodland creation.  Our experienced team has a thorough understanding of these complex grants - and of the evolving policy as these grants change.

Tree risk
& tree health

Landowners are legally responsible for the safety of any trees on their property.   This means that they are personally accountable if a tree or branch falls and causes damage or harm to property or people.

Timber production
& sales

Getting the maximum value from your timber is critical.   Our timber extraction is completed to the best possible standard with regard for health and safety, the environment and the long-term value of the wood.

Woodland creation
& carbon sales

Government policy is creating a push for woodland creation as we aim for net zero carbon emissions and increased habitat for biodiversity. We can assist with Woodland Creation projects at any scale.
